Vitamin C treatment reduces elevated C-reactive protein.

Plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) is an inflammatory biomarker that predicts cardiovascular disease. Lowering elevated CRP with statins has reduced the incidence of cardiovascular disease. We investigated whether vitamin C or E could reduce CRP. Healthy nonsmokers (N=396) were randomized to three groups, 1000 mg/day vitamin C, 800 IU/day vitamin E, or placebo, for 2 months. Median baseline CRP wa...

C-REACTIVE PROTEIN RESPONSE IN ANGINA PECTORIS

C-reactive protein (CRP) response was studied in 44 patients with acute angina pectoris admitted to the coronary care unit. 71 % of patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI)had positive CRP test while 73% of patients presumed to have unstable angina pectoris had negative CRP test. This test can be helpful in differentiating between acute MI and unstable angina pectoris.

Rosuvastatin in patients with elevated C-reactive protein.

To the Editor: Ridker et al. (Nov. 20 issue) report the results of Justification for the Use of Statins in Prevention: an Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin (JUPITER),1 which showed that rosuvastatin significantly reduced cardiovascular events in patients with elevated levels of C-reactive protein. However, broad application of their results in primary prevention is premature, since the...

C-reactive protein is elevated 30 years after eclamptic pregnancy.

Women with a history of preeclampsia or eclampsia (seizure during preeclamptic pregnancy) are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease after pregnancy for reasons that remain unclear. Prospective studies during pregnancy suggest that inflammation, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance are associated with increased risk of preeclampsia. Elevated serum C-reactive protein (CRP >3 mg/L) is an in...
